Logistics — Walvis Bay

Coal export via Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is the alternative deep-water gateway for Zimbabwean coal, favoured when Durban and Beira are congested or when the cargo is Atlantic-bound for West Africa, Europe or the Americas.

The Trans-Kalahari corridor is longer but uncongested and highly predictable, which matters for laycan-sensitive shipments.

Routing

Hwange through Kazungula or Plumtree into Botswana, across the Trans-Kalahari to Walvis Bay — typically 10–16 days with bonded transit throughout.

When Walvis Bay beats Durban

Atlantic-bound destinations, congested laycans at Durban, or shipments where predictability matters more than the lowest road rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is Walvis Bay more expensive than Durban?
Road cost per tonne is usually higher, but for Atlantic-bound cargo the sea leg is shorter and total landed cost can be lower. We quote both.
