How to buy coal from Zimbabwe
Buying coal internationally is straightforward once you know the sequence. This guide sets out exactly how a first consignment moves from enquiry to delivered tonnes, and where inexperienced buyers usually lose money.
1. Define your specification
Start with calorific value, sulphur ceiling, ash ceiling, moisture and sizing. If you do not know these, tell us your plant type and application and we will propose a grade rather than guess.
2. Request a dated quotation
A serious coal quotation states grade, specification with tolerances, tonnage, Incoterm, delivery point, lead time, payment terms and validity period. Anything without a validity date is not a quotation.
3. Agree inspection and rejection terms
Nominate an inspectorate (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek), agree the sampling point, and write in a price-adjustment table for specification variance plus a rejection threshold. This single clause protects both parties.
4. Set payment terms
Common structures are 30% deposit with balance against loading documents, or an irrevocable letter of credit at sight. Never pay 100% in advance to an unverified counterparty.

5. Take delivery and reconcile
Reconcile the delivered weighbridge tonnage against loading certificates, check the certificate of analysis against contract specification and apply any agreed price adjustment before releasing final payment.
